Help Your Clients Change through MI Techniques

Motivational Interviewing: Beyond Substance Use Treatment

    Presented by Bonnie Kaufman, LPCC

Saturday, April 20th 9:00 am to 1:30 pm

    4 CEs available

    Workshop Description

This is a beginner level course for mental health professionals centered around ways Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques can assist them in their counseling practice. Founded by William Miller, Motivational Interviewing is described as: "A collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion."

Throughout the training, we will learn the origin of Motivational Interviewing and its history, discuss how change works, the principles of MI, and the evidence based techniques, and explore challenging examples that will help the clinician visualize Motivational Interviewing in practice.

    Educational Goals

This course is meant to gain an understanding of the history and principles of Motivational Interviewing, along with the cycle of change. Participants will learn and practice specific therapeutic techniques related to Motivational Interviewing and discuss challenging situations that may arise with our clients, such as resistance to therapy. Participants will also gain an understanding of best practices regarding the implementation of Motivational Interviewing.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

    1. Explain how Motivational Interviewing came into formation and how it relates within the history of substance use treatment modalities
    2. Apply the four main components of the "spirit" of Motivational Interviewing

    3. Apply Motivational Interviewing techniques to a number of mental health challenges beyond substance abuse treatment

    4. Discuss the ways Motivational Interviewing can be applied in culturally sensitive ways

    5. Identify the difference between ambivalence and denial.

    6. Explain how and why MI is appropriate for brief counseling and assess where clients are in the Stages of Change

    7. Identify the eight key strategic goals of Motivational Interviewing

    8. Identify the five principles of Motivational Interviewing, as well as the four processes that guide our treatment

    9. Identify at least five methods and specialized techniques used in Motivational Interviewing, including wording and examples to illustrate techniques in practice

Get your BBS-required telehealth training with Marin CAMFT

Telehealth: Law & Ethics, Technology, and Best Practices for Connecting with Your Clients

3 Law & Ethics CEs available

This course is designed to satisfy the requirements of California AB 1759 (Chapter 520, Statutes of 2022) and also qualifies for 3 law and ethics CEs.  The California Board of Behavioral Sciences requires current license holders up for renewal and future applicants for licensure to have completed three hours of training in the provision of mental health services, including law and ethics related to telehealth.

      Workshop Description

In many ways, providing therapy through Zoom or other online options is similar to working with a client in person – except when the technology glitches out, or the client is in crisis. Are you prepared for these situations? This course offers specific guidance on the legal requirements and practical considerations for providing therapy by telehealth in California, including informed consent, assessing appropriateness for telehealth, telehealth across state lines, HIPAA and confidentiality, and documentation. You’ll learn about important safety plans that should be prepared for each client, along with suggestions for implementing a simple technology failure protocol. The focus will be on best practices for two-way video therapy conducted on Zoom or other platforms, though all telehealth modalities will be discussed.

      Educational Goals

This course covers the California laws for delivery of telehealth by LMFTs, LPCCs, LCSWs, and LEPs, along with ethical requirements established by professional associations including CAMFT, ACA, etc., with a focus on client safety and unique considerations for clinical care via telehealth.

      Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this morning presentation, participants will be able to:
      1. Assess a prospective client for suitability for therapy via telehealth.
      2. Identify 3 requirements in California law for documenting telehealth sessions with clients.
      3. Name 3 components of a client telehealth safety plan.
      4. Explain when telehealth is permitted across state lines and describe how a California therapist should assess legality of providing telehealth to a specific client in a specific state before providing care.
      5. Describe 2 ways that telehealth may increase equity in mental health for marginalized populations and support social justice.
      6. Apply an ethical decision-making model to common scenarios that uniquely arise in the provision of telehealth.

      Presenter Lisa Wenninger

Lisa Wenninger, LPCC, BC-TMHLisa Wenninger, MA, MBA, NCC, LPCC, BC-TMH (she/her) is a doctoral candidate in Counselor Education & Supervision at Antioch University, with a research focus on antiracist skills in counseling, and coursework and experience in teaching teletherapy skills to counseling students. Lisa was herself trained in telehealth starting in early 2019 in her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. She is a CCE Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider and received the 2022 CCE Board Certified-TeleMental Health Provider training award by the NBCC Foundation. Lisa has an MBA from Columbia and extensive experience in technology from a 20-year career in software development before becoming a therapist. Lisa is a California LPCC and a National Certified Counselor. Lisa's clinical website is https://theworkiswithin.com

Attendance for the entirety of the Zoom event and completion of the course evaluation afterwards will qualify for 3.0 Law & Ethics Continuing Education hours.

Note: If you attended this telehealth training by this presenter before, you are welcome to retake it however based on BBS rules you would not be able to claim the CEs for it again within the same license renewal period. However, if you attended a different telehealth training from a different presenter, then you're invited to take this training which would count towards your law and ethics requirements and the standard CE requirements. This curriculum is updated from the original content presented, to account for changes in telehealth laws as of 2024.

Upon registering you will receive a Zoom link and password.
