Pre-licensed 3000 Hour Club In-Person Meetup with Ice Cream!

Saturday, October 17th in San Rafael

Join us for free ice cream and community. We will meet Saturday, October 17 at 3pm at Double Rainbow Cafe in San Rafael to share about people's experiences. Get the scoop on the road to licensure while getting a scoop of ice cream on us! Come with any questions you might have for the group, or just for the opportunity to connect with others going through the same stuff. Or just come for the ice cream. No judgment.

How to Treat Eating Disorders in Your Practice: A Social Justice-Informed Clinical Training

Workshop Description

The need to incorporate social justice perspectives and practices in our understandings of and approach to eating disorders treatment is irrefutable. When eating disorders occurs in marginalized people, the dynamics have increasing complexity due to being marginalized, isolated, or stigmatized. Marginalized people seeking professional help may find eating disorders services unequipped to provide the interventions and treatment for their intersecting identities. Most eating disorders services are constructed for cisgender heterosexual affluent, thin, able-bodied women, and cannot offer appropriate services for a more diverse client population. Eating Disorders treatment programs, advocates and clinicians need to work together to ensure all individuals with eating disorders can access safe and intersectional treatment options.

This three-hour workshop will explore how racial and cultural stereotypes may contribute to under-recognition of eating disorders among BIPOC communities and influence clinicians’ assessment, treatment recommendations, and engagement with clients. Participants will examine how weight stigma and weight-centric assumptions can contribute to missed or delayed diagnoses, particularly among individuals with subthreshold or atypical presentations and those in larger bodies. Participants will also examine how gender and sexual identity shape eating disorder presentation and access to care, including the impact of gendered stereotypes and assumptions about who develops eating disorders.

Through case examples and guided reflection, participants will examine how their own biases and social conditioning may influence the therapeutic relationship and clinical decision-making. The workshop emphasizes cultural humility, weight-inclusive practice, trauma-informed care, and social justice as essential components of ethical and equitable eating disorder treatment.

Educational Goals

This workshop will explore how weight/body size, race/ethnicity, and gender/sexual identity influence the development, recognition, assessment, treatment, and recovery of eating disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

Identify three current research and clinical practice gaps that contribute to the under recognition, misdiagnosis, and inadequate treatment of eating disorders across diverse populations.
Describe the importance of holistic, social justice–informed conceptualizations of eating disorders that consider sociocultural factors, weight stigma, systemic inequities, and intersecting identities in assessment and treatment.
Apply three actionable strategies for translating awareness of research gaps, clinical biases, and sociocultural factors into more equitable, culturally responsive, and evidence-informed eating disorder assessment and treatment practices.

Presenter Dr. Marcella Raimondo

Marcella Raimondo, PhD, MPH, is a clinical psychologist, educator, and passionate advocate for social justice in eating disorder care. She has worked in the eating disorder field since 1995, including serving as Director of Media Literacy at About-Face and in leadership and advisory roles with organizations including the Academy for Eating Disorders, ASDAH, and Eating Disorder Recovery Support. Marcella provides clinical training, consultation, and supervision with a focus on culturally responsive, weight-inclusive, and equitable eating disorder treatment. She currently manages the Eating Disorders Program at Lyon-Martin and provides clinical services in Alameda County. Her professional work, recovery journey, and martial arts practice inspire her commitment to multicultural body nurturance, community, and social justice.

Attendance at the training in full and completion of the course evaluation afterwards qualifies for 3 hours of Continuing Education (3 CEs).

Date: Sunday, November 15

Time: Please arrive by 8:45am to register. Training begins at 9:00am and goes to 12:15pm (3 hours of training plus time for a break)

Cost: $45 for licensed Marin CAMFT members; $35 for our pre-licensed members; $60 for licensed therapists who are not members of Marin CAMFT. Other rates including reciprocal rates for members of RECAMFT also available, see registration panel.

For more information about the Friday Continuing Education Series or about joining the Marin CAMFT Continuing Education Committee, please contact our Director of Programs Arianna Sifuentes.

Continuing Education: This workshop meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LEPs and/or LPCCs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. These CEs will be provided by Marin CAMFT (CAMFT Provider # 56895), which is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. We regret that at this time we are not able to provide CE credits for Licensed Psychologists. Participants must attend the full duration of this in-person program, with attendance demonstrated by signing the attendance logs at both the beginning and the end of the training, and complete the course evaluation to receive the CE completion certificate. Marin CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. Contact our Director of Programs for more information.
Continuing Education Goal: Marin CAMFT is committed to offering continuing education courses to train LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs to treat any client in an ethically and clinically sound manner based upon current accepted standards of practice.
Refund Policy: Our refund policy requires a $20 processing fee, and we must be notified in advance of the event if you would like to cancel. We do not provide refunds in case of non-attendance by the registrant. Please contact our Director of Programs with any questions.
