A therapist's professional will sets out in advance several key items in the event you are incapacitated or die, including:

  • Who will let your clients know what has happened, and how will clients be contacted?
  • What manner of transition will be set up so that existing clients have continuity of care?
  • What provisions can be made for clients to process their own loss, grief, and other reactions in the case of a therapist's death?
  • What will happen with a therapist's office, client records, billing and insurance, and office belongings?

This course reviews the need for mental health professionals to have a professional will. We will review the ethical standards related to professional wills, the necessary components of a professional will, and help practitioners understand what to do once their professional will has been created. Meri Hayos, both an attorney and licensed MFT, will lead clinicians through the ins and outs of writing your professional will.

Course outline

2. Applicable ethical standards

3. Components of a professional will (including a template to help create the will and time in the course to help complete the template)
