Treating Affairs - Helping Couples Heal and Rebuild Trust
Lisa Lund, LMFT

The pain of an affair is intense. The betrayed partner usually suffers from acute stress or PTSD and may experience hyper-vigilance, intrusive images, and emotional numbing. The unfaithful partner may experience grief, shame, guilt and ambivalence. Both often fluctuate rapidly in their emotions from fear and sadness to anger and resentment. We, as therapists, need to be able to help our couples express the range of emotions in a healing way rather than a destructive one so that they can create a joined narrative of what has happened to them. To do so, we need a roadmap. In this talk we will be visiting the Gottman’s Atone, Attune and Attach model of Affair Recovery. This model provides clinicians with an unbiased approach that compassionately services both partners as they struggle to rebuild a collapsed marriage.

Educational Goals:

  • A better understanding of what goes wrong in a relationship that causes the erosion of trust and infidelity.
  • A three step method to treating affairs
  • What pitfalls should the therapist avoid in treating affairs.

Lisa Lund’s specialty is in helping couples improve their relationships. She is a Master Certified Gottman Therapist and works directly with couples in Kentfield at “A Couple’s Place”. In addition to working with couples privately, she teaches workshops and retreats to couples wanting to enhance or repair their relationships. Currently, Lisa is offering The Art and Science of Love: Couples Weekend Workshop and Retreat three times a year at the Acqua Hotel in Mill Valley. Lisa also trains clinicians in the Gottman Method of Couples Counseling. She offers all levels of Gottman Training in San Anselmo and consults with clinicians getting certified in the Gottman Method.
