Description:

Every clinician has experienced blocks in treatment and child clients can pose unique challenges.  They can be hesitant to build rapport; have thoughts and emotions too painful to discuss; or unable to verbalize the source of their distress.

What can we do to help child clients acclimate, participate, and benefit from therapeutic intervention?  There are many ways that art therapy can help.

The purpose of this course is to offer an overview of the fundamentals of art therapy.  As an introductory resource this course will begin with a definition of art therapy and a brief history of its development.  This will be followed by a discussion about what art therapy is and isn’t and practical considerations.

Ways that art therapy can assist the therapist with beginning, middle, and ending phases of treatment will also be discussed.  Case vignettes will be provided to illustrate how the use of art therapy can help children break through blocks in treatment.

Time will be set aside for an Art Therapy Experiential and Q&A.

A) 3 sheets of white paper 12x18 (Creatology construction paper is best, $5.00 for a pkg. 50 at Michaels).
