Workshop Description: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, collaborative, and goal-oriented style of communication and counseling for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change. MI is an evidence-based method and a valuable skill to have in a therapist’s toolkit. This interactive introductory workshop will introduce the key principles, style, and spirit of MI.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will be able to: Describe the fundamental style, principles, and the spirit of MI. Identify the 4 fundamental processes of MI. Identify 2 styles of communicating to determine the one that evokes collaboration between therapist and client. Identify the 5 components of the acronym OARS +I and apply “R” with challenging client statements.

Presenter: Suzanne D. Alfandari, MS, LMFT, an experienced and passionate Motivational Interviewing (MI) trainer, is a member of MINT (the International Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) and is a MINT Certified Trainer. Suzanne is a Motivational Interviewing Trainer at UC-Davis Extension, and the Bay Area Academy with California State University in Fresno. She also provides training to all categories of mental health practitioners, nurses, doctors, teachers, and administrative staff, in behavioral health agencies, county agencies, and schools, where there are opportunities for the community to benefit from Motivational Interviewing skills. She offers follow-up individual and group MI consultations. Suzanne spent over 15 years working with Marin County Mental Health as a therapist, serving youth and families and provided Motivational Interviewing training for psychology interns. Suzanne holds a MS in Counseling Psychology Specialization: Marriage, Family and Child Counseling from Dominican University in San Rafael, and a BS from the State University of New York College at Oneonta, New York. Attendance at the live event and completion of the evaluation qualifies for 4 hours of Continuing Education Units (4 CEUs). PLEASE NOTE: This event will be audio recorded. Continuing Education: This workshop meets the qualifications for continuing education units for LMFTs, LCSWs, LEPs and LPCCs. The number of CEUs awarded is specified in the event description. These CEUs will be provided by Marin CAMFT (CAMFT Provider # 56895), which is approved by CAMFT to sponsor CE for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. We regret that at this time we are not able to provide CE units for Licensed Psychologists. Participants must attend the full session and complete the evaluation at the end to receive CE completion certificate. Marin CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.
