Marin CAMFT is excited to host Ben Caldwell for our law and ethics trainings this year. Ben Caldwell is a longtime advocate for our profession, frequently making public comments on issues of licensure, supervision, and telehealth in BBS open meetings, and working to create change. We hope you'll join us for these timely workshops as Ben shares with us the latest changes in the legal and ethical environment for practicing psychotherapy!
Register for one or both of these two workshops being held on October 22. Each will be different! Both qualify for the BBS requirement for Law & Ethics continuing education.

Law & Ethics 2022 Two-Part Series: Adapting to the New Realities of Clinical Practice
The coronavirus pandemic changed a great deal about how therapists think and work. Some emergency provisions around telehealth have been made permanent. Demand for mental health services has increased dramatically. And many clinicians are on the edge of burnout. Join us for one or both of this two-part series on the law and ethics of the changing psychotherapy profession in California.
Part 1 (morning): Changes in California Law and Trends in Ethical Standards for Psychotherapy
Workshop Description
In this first presentation, we will review the many recent and planned changes to California law for master’s-level mental health professionals. Rules have changed significantly in the past two years, from Emotional Support Animal letters to major changes in supervision rules. Additional meaningful changes around telehealth and continuing education are on the horizon. Meanwhile, ethics codes are continuing to evolve, most recently with updates to the NASW code of ethics in 2021. We'll review larger trends in ethics with an eye toward future updates to MFT and counseling codes. Clinicians who are fully aware of, and adapt to, these changes can reduce risk to their practices, their clients, and their supervisees.
Learning Objectives for Part 1
Upon completion of this morning presentation, participants will be able to:
- List at least four recent changes in relevant state law for California master’s-level mental health providers
- List at least three planned future changes in state law for California master’s-level mental health providers.
- Describe at least two trends in professional ethical standards for mental health care.
- Describe at least two ways in which telehealth standards and practices have impacted equity and diversity in mental health care.
Presenter Ben Caldwell
Benjamin E. Caldwell, PsyD, is a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (#42723) and Adjunct Faculty for California State University Northridge and The Wright Institute in Berkeley. He is the author of Saving Psychotherapy and Basics of California Law for LMFTs, LPCCs, and LCSWs. Dr. Caldwell is a widely recognized expert on mental health ethics and policy, spending 10 years as Chair of the Advocacy Committee for AAMFT-California, serving a 3-year term on the AAMFT Ethics Committee, serving as Chair of the workgroup that produced Best Practices in the Online Practice of Couple and Family Therapy, and serving as Editor of the User's Guide to the 2015 AAMFT Code of Ethics.
Attendance for the entirety of the Zoom event and completion of the course evaluation afterwards will qualify for 3.0 Law & Ethics Continuing Education hours.

- Continuing Education: This workshop meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LEPs and/or LPCCs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. These CEUs will be provided by Marin CAMFT (CAMFT Provider # 56895), which is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. We regret that at this time we are not able to provide CE units for Licensed Psychologists. Participants must attend the full live session and complete the evaluation at the end to receive CE completion certificate. Marin CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program and its contents. - Continuing Education Goal: Marin CAMFT is committed to offering continuing education courses to train LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs to treat any client in an ethically and clinically sound manner based upon current accepted standards of practice.
