Workshop Description
Uncomfortable with self harming and suicidal clients? Unclear on why trans youth have higher self harming and suicidal behaviors than their cisgender peers? This introductory training will help you develop a level of comfort working with self harming and suicidal clients with an emphasis on trans youth. We’ll explore vocabulary specific to trans populations, how minority stress impacts trans youth and how that can show up in session. Learn about the person centered model of self injury recovery and how to integrate narrative expressive arts interventions into sessions to support developing self identity and resilience. Develop skills to distinguish when to safety plan clients and when to refer them to an Emergency Department for 5585/5150 assessment.
Educational Goals
This training provides an introduction to working with transgender youth who are experiencing self-harm and suicidal ideation.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Define self harming and suicidal behaviors
- List at least 3 themes of self harming among trans youth
- Apply the Person Centered Model of Self Injury Recovery
