Friday Lunchtime Program
June 14, 2013
Dancing with Fire: A Focusing-Oriented Approach to Couples' Therapy

Presented by: John Amodeo, PhD, LMFT
1.5 CEUs

Eugene Gendlin’s research into psychotherapy effectiveness found that successful clients were mindfully present with their direct, bodily-felt experience in the moment. This presentation highlights how the principles of Focusing can be applied to couples therapy--and complement the work you as therapist are already doing. Through lecture, discussion, and an experiential role play, John Amodeo will demonstrate how Focusing offers a practical, safe way to uncover underlying feelings and longings. As couples learn how to express their feelings and wants in a tender, non-shaming way, a climate is created that invites and nurtures intimacy, love, and connection. The presentation will also emphasize how Focusing can help deepen the therapist’s connection with each person through experiential listening, as well as interrupt the common cycle of blame, defensiveness, and attack, helping couples cultivate an attitude of respect, gentleness, and kindness toward themselves and each other.

John Amodeo, PhD, has been a licensed MFT for over 30 years. He has a private practice both in San Francisco and San Rafael, where he sees couples. He is a Focusing trainer and provider, and he has also trained in Somatic Experiencing for trauma. John Amodeo is the author of the forthcoming book, Dancing with Fire: A Mindful Way to Loving Relationships (2013), as well as of The Authentic Heart and Love & Betrayal. He lectures internationally on love and relationships and has been a featured guest on CNN, CNBC, Donahue, and New Dimensions Radio. He is a former writer and contributing editor for Yoga Journal and has co-authored a chapter with Susan Johnson on EFT and Buddhism in The Emotionally Focused Casebook. He is also an adjunct faculty member of Meridian University. To learn more about him, visit www.johnamodeo.com.

Networking: Lunchtime Lecture meetings include a formal networking period during which ONLY those members who wish to do so, may give a 30-45 second self-introduction and pitch about their practice. This is a great way to expand one's practice and learn about others’ specialties.
