Gottman’s research has taught us that most relationship conflicts revolve around perpetual issues. In these cases, the couple has either established a state of “dialogue” with the issue or a state of “gridlock” around the issue. Couples in gridlock typically pass through a number of conflictual stages, beginning with individual dreams in opposition,
moving to entrenchment of positions, most often in the form of fears of accepting influence, and finally resulting in partners’ emotional disengagement. In this presentation focused on moving couples from gridlock to dialogue, Lisa Lund’s two-pronged objective is to help us learn to identify and recognize the existential nature of perpetual problems and demonstrate how to use a Gottman intervention to help our couples uncover the dreams that lie beneath their entrenched positions.
