Marin CAMFT is excited to present this extended Saturday workshop
4 CEs available
Workshop Description
Over the past couple of years, we have both witnessed the racial inequity in health care that was exposed by COVID-19, and the reemergence of the racial injustice protest movement and White backlash. These events have alerted Black therapists and their allies to the increased distress experienced by people of color. These inequities have also exposed a critical need to promote effective ways to integrate cultural factors into therapy.
Race is typically treated as a demographic category in case formulations. By extension, the internal working model of racial identity is a clinical blind spot. In his book Emotionally Focused Therapy with African American Couples, the presenter suggests that therapists’ work most effectively with Black couples when they have a conceptual model for race-matters, including racism, racial identity, race-based events, and racial trauma.
This training will demonstrate how to seamlessly integrate cultural factors and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). This integrative model moves well beyond seeing culture or race as neutral and shows with multiple video tapes and examples how therapists can use the power of cultural deep roots. This workshop addresses useful dynamic processes of Black negative priming, racial distress cues, and racial identity.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Describe an integrative way to explore racial identity.
- Discuss 3 ways which EFT interventions can process racist events that occur in the larger context of life, and within the couple interactions.
- Describe 3 elements of a conceptual map of cultural identity and integrate into therapy.
- Explain how to work with “negative priming” and the invisible influences of racism in the couples’ negative pattern of interactions.
