Marin CAMFT is offering a two-part series on Internal Family Systems in October
Note: This two-part workshop has been offered by Marin CAMFT in May 2021 and December 2022. If you took Dorothy's workshop previously, you are welcome to re-take this as a refresher, though note that BBS rules do not allow counting CEs from the same course multiple times (only new participants qualify for CEs). Part 2 will be offered the following Friday, October 18th, as a separate event. You may register for just Part 1 or for both workshops.
2 CEs available (for those who have not taken this course from Marin CAMFT before)
Free for Marin CAMFT members and reciprocal chapter members!
Part 1: Workshop Description
People instinctively refer to parts of themselves. “A part of me wants to see my friends, another part of me wants to rest at home.” Internal Family Systems (IFS) harnesses this instinct as a tool for developing insight and self-compassion.
While studying Family Systems Therapy, Dr. Richard Schwartz observed clients using “parts” language and developed IFS. Since a family can be seen as a single entity composed of individuals, an individual can be seen as a single entity composed of parts.
Conflicting parts cause anxiety leaving us feeling stuck. Certain parts can feel intolerable. By gaining perspective on one part at a time, we can liberate parts that have been exiled to the unconscious. From an IFS perspective all parts are welcome, even when a welcoming attitude seems counter-intuitive.
Respect for any part’s positive intention invites liberation from suffering and helps the part to redefine its intended role. Eliminating the suffering, not the part, provides a clear foundation for self-compassion.
An Introduction to the IFS Model is an overview of IFS and its potential benefits. Completion of this workshop does not constitute being trained in the IFS model. Formal training is available through the IFS Institute at https://ifs-institute.com.
Educational Goals
- Learn the basic principles of the IFS model.
- Understand how basic IFS assumptions and tools are used for conducting an IFS session.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Describe the origin of the IFS model.
- Understand basic assumptions of IFS including how to distinguish a part from Self, and the role of a presenting problem in the system.
- Distinguish between basic elements of the IFS model: managers, firefighters, exiles, all distinct from Self.
- Distinguish between blended and un-blended states, and understand the different approaches to each.
- Listen for and identify discreet parts of a client’s system.
- Listen for and identify elements of a part.
Presenter
Dorothy O'Leary, LMFT Internal Family Systems (IFS) has provided the framework for Dorothy O’Leary’s psychotherapy practice since she began studying IFS in 2016. She has completed all three levels of IFS trainings and continues to cultivate her skills and style through additional trainings, consultations, practice groups, and using IFS in her practice as well as daily life. Dorothy has been a program assistant for trainings through the IFS institute, and assisted with introducing IFS to practitioners in Pakistan for the first time. Dorothy has been in private practice since 2012, and continues to find IFS a valuable tool growing as a person and as a practitioner.
